If you are unsure whether a psychoeducational evaluation or therapy may be appropriate for your child, a complimentary phone consultation is a helpful place to start. During this conversation, we can discuss your concerns, answer questions about our services, and help determine the most appropriate next steps for your child and family. Please contact Sprouting Minds to schedule a complimentary consultation.
Please note that Sprouting Minds provides evaluation services for children ages five and older and does not provide autism spectrum disorder (ASD) evaluations.
Testing sessions are typically scheduled in the morning, when children and adolescents tend to be most alert and focused; however, afternoon appointments are also available for individuals who are more comfortable testing later in the day. Comprehensive psychoeducational evaluations are generally completed over two sessions, with each session lasting approximately two to four hours depending on the individual’s age and testing needs. Gifted/IQ assessments are typically completed in one session lasting approximately one-and-a-half to two hours.
Most assessment forms are completed electronically and will be emailed to you after your appointment is scheduled. If you prefer to complete paper forms, please let us know, and we will be happy to mail them to you.
Talking with your child about what to expect can help them feel more comfortable and confident about the testing process. In age-appropriate terms, explain that they will be completing a variety of activities designed to help us better understand how they learn, including the things that come easily to them and the areas that may be more challenging. It can be helpful to remind your child that everyone has different strengths and that there are no expectations for them to know all of the answers or get everything right.
Most importantly, your child should understand that testing is intended to help the adults who support them better understand what they need to be successful. The information gathered will help identify strategies and supports that can make learning feel more manageable and reduce frustration at school.
Please make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a nutritious meal before arriving for their appointment so they are comfortable, alert, and ready to do their best. Your child is welcome to bring a snack and drink, and short breaks will be provided throughout the testing session as needed.
Parents are not expected to remain at the office during testing and are welcome to leave once their child is settled and comfortable.
Following the completion of testing, a feedback conference will be scheduled to review the evaluation results, discuss recommendations, and answer any questions. Older students are encouraged to participate in the feedback conference when appropriate so they can better understand their individual strengths, challenges, and recommendations. Families will also receive a comprehensive written report that summarizes the findings and provides individualized recommendations for appropriate interventions, accommodations, and supports.
When appropriate, the evaluation report may be used to help families request specialized services or accommodations through their child’s school or other educational setting. Requirements for documentation vary by school, institution, and testing organization, and families are encouraged to confirm any specific documentation requirements when seeking accommodations.
